Guardians are a Guild Wars 2 tanking class. They wear heavy armor and can equip various weapons to serve the purpose of defending their comrades. The virtues are the main profession mechanic. Guardians have three virtues. Each virtue comes with all sorts of effects that give buffs for the guardian and its allies. The virtues can also damage enemies. The Virtue of Justice puts a burn effect on enemies. The Virtue of Resolve regenerates HP for the guardian and its allies. The Virtue of Courage enables the guardian and its allies to gain aegis. The virtues make up for the lower HP the guardian has compared to the warrior profession. The virtues are empowered through the use of traits.
The guardians have four unique skills. Symbols give buffs to allies and deal damage to enemies. Wards inflict a push-back effect on enemies. Spirit weapons deal damage and provide help. Consecration has abilities that can remove conditions and offers defense.
There are five core specializations for this class. Each specialization favors a certain set of weapons.
Zeal is the specialization that boosts great swords and scepters. This specialization increases damage. It is the best one to use in combination with spirit weapons.
Radiance goes hand in hand with the Virtue of Justice. It is also used with torches, swords, and signet skills. This specialization focuses on burning and critical hits.
The valor specialization is used with shields and meditation skills. It is the specialization to use when the Virtue of Courage is chosen.
The honor specialization works with staves, maces, and symbol skills. When using this specialization, the guardian will focus on restoring HP and dodging.
The virtues specialization is for hammers, consecration, and virtue skills. This one helps with retaliation. Dragonhunter is an elite specialization that allows the guardian to use longbows and traps. The other elite specialization is Firebrand. This one unlocks axes and mantra skills.
The guardian can benefit from multiple crafting disciplines. Weaponsmithing is of particular use as it allows the guardian to craft a variety of weapons. Huntsman is good too. The guardian wears heavy armor which is crafted using the armorsmith discipline. Artificer and jeweler disciplines can be of use as well. Last but not least, the chef discipline allows the player to create food that gives various buffs.
